DJ Mujava - Township Funk

Warp Records are jumping headfirst on to the Kwaito bandwagon by releasing a record by J Burg's DJ Mujava. Billed as South Africa's answer to Baile Funk, Kwaito meshes the syncopated sound of House music with local rhythms, this time with an African tribal slant. Both styles also emerged in the early nineties. DJ Mujava is one of the most popular Kwaito DJ's and it made sense that if anyone was going to bring attention to the sound of the Pretoria projects it would be him.

Flying Lotus Album Launch Bouncy BBQ Dilema

FlyLo's album launch conflicts with a good friends party. They are both rilling for my attention, what can I say? I'm torn. In a bid to out do each other Flying Lotus is laying on a BBQ, in a warehouse, with a live band in anticipation of his fourthcoming album Califronia on Warp. That's sure to fuel some sweet Cali Vibes. But Oh wait.. Not only is my friend rolling out a BBQ feat. Sausages from Clive no doubt. In a well executed counterstrike, he's also getting a full size bouncy castle. I think I may just have to go to both.

The Gaslamp Killer

I found this mix floating around the ether. It comes courtesy of yet another LA based turntablist. The Gas Lamp Killer is his name and killing.. err Gas Lamps is his game? Well if a Gas Lamp was a club in the hinterland of the Hollywood Hills then he'd definitely live up to the title. This mix which was recorded for a session at Dublab is eclectic to say the least, melding breakbeat, dubstep, ethnic grooves and Nirvana all to good measure. Soon to be anointed onto the Warp Records roster, TGLK will sit neatly long side your Prefuse 73's and Flying Lotus'. He's got some live dates in the UK in April, sweet!
